What Is Afro-Caribbean Curry Powder? And How to Cook With It

Afro-Caribbean curry powder blends Indian curry spices with Caribbean warmth, using more turmeric plus allspice, thyme and ginger than a standard curry powder. It is built for stews, curried rice, and Caribbean chicken or goat curry.

What is Afro-Caribbean curry powder?

It is a fusion blend. Indian curry spices like turmeric, coriander, cumin and fenugreek meet Caribbean notes of allspice, thyme and ginger, giving a golden, warming, mild-to-medium curry that is distinct from a standard supermarket curry powder.

How is it different from regular curry powder?

More turmeric and allspice, a fuller spice count, and a warm rather than fiery heat. Standard curry powder often uses three or four spices, where a proper Afro-Caribbean blend uses around a dozen.

How to cook with it

Fry onion until soft, add about two tablespoons per kilo of meat or vegetables, toast for thirty seconds, then add tomato or coconut milk and simmer. It is excellent in goat curry, chicken curry, curried rice and lentil dal.
